Gender Stereotypes
When it comes to gender, many people still expect different things from men and women. Here are five things Reddit user’s believe society looks down on women for:
All your life you might have heard that dolls are for girls and racing cars are for boys. This type of ideas were forced into kids head for the past decade through media such as T.V, commercials, and books since the time the kid is born. Often media uses gender stereotypes to sell their product thinking that it will appeal to the person that this product is meant for. But before we go too far let me explain you what are gender stereotypes. Gender- a gender is an explanation we are taught in school which explains what it means to be a boy and what does it mean to be a girl. Stereotype- a stereotype is basically an idea that one group of people might have about the other group of people which may or may not be true; in the case of gender stereotypes the two groups are boys and girls. For example if we assume that there are games only for boys and only for girls we are using gender stereotypes. Ok we explained you what are gender stereotypes now let’s start of and move on to the interesting part.
How do gender stereotypes are shown in marketing and how do they help the owner of companies to get extra money in their pockets. The most important slogan of every single company is “use less, get more” you don’t understand what we mean let me explain you a little bit more about it. Let’s look at dove, a company that makes soup. So dove mostly markets its product to women. But recently dove made “man” soup which is literally the same but has a different shape but the commercial was a man and the slogan was be brave like a man. This really affianced women because dove told them that men are braver than women, but the company got twice as much money from just making the soup a different shape. Also this also happens with the kids toys. Now let’s look at Lego, a massive toy company that is one of the richest toy companies in the world. But it does not help it to not using gender stereotypes. Before Lego mostly marketed there toy for boys and girls. But recently Lego made a new toy line which is called Lego friends which is sadly gender stereotyping girls that there are only interested in decorating houses and getting there hair done in a solon but they got twice as much money.
- Having “ too many” sexual partners. While no one’s “number “ should matter, the sexual double standard is alive and well. Men who sleep around are called “studs” but women who do the same are called “sluts”. Women labelled “promiscuous” were rejected by their male and female peers.
- Having a messy home. An estimated 81 percent of men and 87 percent of women report feeling anxious about home upkeep, women still do the majority of housework. Why? Because women are judged much more harshly than men for having a messy home.
- Being overweight. Though both men and women experience being overweight, studies have found that overweight women feel more social pressure to lose weight than overweight men.
- Being blunt or assertive. A woman who speaks her mind too much is deemed bossy, aggressive or arrogant. Whereas a mouthy dude is simply showcasing his executive leadership skills.
- Not having children. Childfree women are often referred to as “selfish” and told they will regret their decision not to have kids. Because what kind of unnatural woman not want to be a mother? Men do not get so much flak… Being a dad is not considered to be an essential part of men hood. Plus men have much more time to decide if they want to have kids or not.
